Smoking and Public Health

Full course description

Hello and welcome to our open-access short course about smoking and public health. This course is designed to give you an introduction to understanding how we measure the impact of smoking on the health of the population and the measures we can put in place to reduce future harm. We will also look at the evidence on the use and safety of e-cigarettes.

The course is delivered through a mixture of reading, videos and interactive quizzes, and there is a short test at the end to assess your understanding. In total the course should take about 3 hours to work through.

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe how the harm of smoking is measured at a population level
  2. Explain why some people are more likely to smoke than others and the link between smoking rates and socio-economic deprivation
  3. Identify a range of effective public health measures that can be implemented to reduce harm from smoking
  4. Discuss the potential benefits and harms of e-cigarette use
